This woman travels the world ‘chinning’ to combat unrealistic beauty standards

Count me chin

By Anna Freeman

We all know that couple who quit their ‘normal’ life for a life of ‘adventure’. Travelling the world and posting posed photos dripping in unencumbered smugness. Each selfie making your blood boil more as you sit at your desk at work browsing ASOS, just waiting for lunchtime; the highlight of your day.

There’s no denying us humans are jealous creatures. Can any of us really say we don’t twinge with envy every time a perfectly contoured, Kardashian-esque acquaintance shares a photograph of their legs in some tropical paradise on Instagram? Captioned ‘hot dogs or legs?’ obviously.

That’s why it’s great to see someone tearing up the social media handbook and playing by her own rules. Meet Michelle Liu, the 21-year-old from Boston, Massachusetts, setting the internet on fire with flawless puns and a flawless chin to go with them.

Seriously in disbe-leaf that all of you have (fall)owed me 💕 let me know where I should def go next in my chinventures 🤓

In September 2016, Liu went on a once-in-a-lifetime trip around Europe. And instead of pouting for her sexiest selfie attempts, she opted for a ‘chinnier’ aesthetic. Liu calls it ‘chinning’ and documents her ‘chinventures’ on Instagram. Little did she know, the whole world is with her.

Liu’s Instagram page has gone viral online. Comments under her pictures include a mix of praise, laughter and support, gaining her thousands of followers all along for the journey. Chinventures is the perfect remedy for all the narcissistic holiday snaps that so often frequent social media sites. She’s chinning it!

Here are some of my favourite pictures from Liu’s frankly groundbreaking Instagram page:

China (or Chin-a)

Fun fact: Apparently my great-uncle was one of Chairman Mao’s personal guards 😮
